Los terrenos donde se emplaza el Parque eran de propiedad de don Guillermo González de Hontaneda, quien los legó al estado, después de una petición hecha por el Ministro Diego Portales para que esa planicie fuera utilizada para prácticas militares.
A partir de la primera horda del exitoso automovilismo chileno de 1950-1960 es que se realizaron grandes y famosos “grandes premios” por el circuito del ese entonces famoso “Parque Alejo Barrios”
En esta fotografia (y otras de gentileza de Leo Perez & CASVitacura) se aprecia en diferente nivel a la actualidad lo que era una carrera del Turismo Carretera Chileno ,entre 1960 y 1965, nombres como el de Bartolomé Ortiz, Papin Jaras, German Mayo , Gac, Queirolo , Garafulic disputaban el circuito de 2900 metros que circundaban las canchas del Parque Alejo Barrios ,bajaban por la Subida Carvallo y rodeaban el mar por la Avenida Altamirano y subian por la Subida El Membrillo .
Posteriormente el circuito se acoto a solo circundar el ovalo del Parque y el Estadio Valparaiso.

En primer plano Boris Garafulic en un Fálcon equipado con un motor 292 de la camioneta F100 seguido de Eduardo Kovacs. A la derecha de la foto se aprecia el velódromo de y a la izquierda el Estadio Valparaíso
Posteriormente dejo de competirse en ese sector de Valparaíso y en los 90′s se hicieron carreras en el Alejo Barrios pero no fue hasta el 27 y 28 de Enero del año 2000 , fecha en la que volvieron a efectuarse carreras ( a mi gusto de buena calidad) ya con un evento de calidad organizativa y muy entretenido (Fiat 600 en 2 categorias, Stock Car y las famosas carreras de Camiones Chocleros)el cual solo se corrió el día Sabado , puesto que por la rivalidad entre clubes , en Quilpué también se programó una fecha el día 28, y junto a esto , el dia 27 un fiat 600 en la curva de las oficinas trompea hacia adentro atropellando a un banderillero , Por esto se suspendio la fecha del dia Domingo y desde ese entonces que no se ha realizado otra fecha en aquel Callejero Nacional.

¡Ahhh, ese Volvo gris (Nº26) que recuerdos me trae. Era el modelo de Gerencia de Copec Salinas por ahí por los `60, era cabro chico y ya me había enamorado de ese modelo y cuando iba a la playa no me cansaba de admirarlo. Igual el Mercedes de Don Eduardo, con esas puertas extrañas para la época, lo veía siempre por la Avda.España.
Revisando los autos parece que no se usaban aún las jaulas.-Se fijan nada de vallas papales y protecciones especiales para el público. Se tuvo suerte, con la ayuda de la mecánica y muñecas de los pilotos.

me encantaria que se pudiera realizar esta carrera, seria muy interesante poder correr en un circuito callejero, segun lo que me pude informar, esta carrera se esta programando para el 1º fin de semana de febrero, por lo cual no toparia con el campeonato de verano de quilpue.
